Allows you to connect a DVI display to your Macintosh computer via a mini-DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port. Mini-DVI ports are found on many models of MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac.

The mini-DisplayPort is a miniaturized version of the DisplayPort interface introduced by Apple on October 14th, 2008. It is used in revisions of the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro notebooks, iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro desktops introduced after October 14th. It is also used in the 24-inch Apple Cinema Display.

The Thunderbolt is a hybrid interface using the mini-DisplayPort connector introduced on February 24, 2011. The distinction between Thunderbolt and a simple mini-Display Port is that Thunderbolt combines both the functionality of mini-DisplayPort for video and PCI Express for other data. Since it is just mini-DisplayPort with added features, mini-DisplayPort adapters and devices are entirely compatible with Thunderbolt.

A single Thunderbolt port supports hubs as well as a daisy chain of up to seven Thunderbolt devices; up to two of these devices may be displays using DisplayPort. Existing mini-DisplayPort adapters for DVI, dual-link DVI, HDMI, and VGA are compatible with Thunderbolt, allowing backwards compatibility and no loss of functionality compared to mini-DisplayPort.
